SEE HOW OTIS ENGINEERS BROUGHT THE GEN360 ELEVATOR TO THE NEXT LEVEL
THIS IS
Use the diamonds on the left to explore the technologies that our engineers created.
1. Innovative, space-saving system solutions
Otis engineers leverage skills in industrial design, human factors engineering, and systems engineering to develop innovative solutions to enhance safety for our service professionals and expand building opportunities for architects. One example is our Maintenance in Car system, which allows mechanics to complete important pieces of maintenance from within the car and eliminates extra space at the top of an elevator shaft, allowing for flat roof building design. We also maximize hoistway space efficiency in our products by using the latest 3D modeling tools and employing high-tech solutions, like in our SiC drive, which is much more compact and efficient.
2. Native IoT architecture
OtisONE is our IoT platform that brings limitless possibilities to our new connected elevators. What does it do?
Real-time elevator information is shared with the cloud through a gateway device Powerful data analytics in the cloud turn data into insight and actions (like elevator status, diagnosing an issue, remote service of the elevator, and more) Cloud-based APIs connect data and insights to customer applications. Through our developer portal, we enable connection to building management applications, security systems, robots… and we can constantly adapt to changing environments and technologies! Cloud-based solutions like eView and eCall – get real-time infotainment from a screen in the elevator, or call the elevator from your phone!
Behind the scenes, this is enabled by significant engineering combining IoT with safety software and electronics, CAN connections, big data analytics and algorithms, and cybersecurity with many layers of protection to protect digital assets on the edge devices, in the cloud, and across our systems.
Gen360 was designed to be especially data-rich. Its electronic CAN bus architecture, plus advanced sensors and cameras throughout the system allow for data from all aspects of the elevator to paint a holistic picture of what’s going on. Of course, a single data point alone only means so much – our data scientists and elevator experts pull on this rich data lake to turn data into diagnoses, predictive insights, and more. This combination of data, analytics, and real-world expertise is what makes our solution so exciting to work on!

Leveraging electronics, cameras, sensors, and big data analytics to generate more data points and insights for Otis ONE
Built upon the connectivity of the cloud, our in-car eView displays show multimedia information in real time so passengers can catch up on events, weather, news, or other building-specific information. The display has another important function: providing passengers with two-way voice and video connecting them to a trained expert in the unlikely event of an elevator fault. Of course, this takes a lot of powerful engineering and embedded software to pull off. Enabling real-time connections with high reliability across different countries with different networks and communications ecosystems is just one example of the complexity behind eView -- our engineers are critical to solving these challenges and many others.
4.
eView™ in-car display with live video link
Our engineers not only work on the electronics and mechanics of elevators, but design apps and fixtures to create a superior passenger experience leveraging their expertise in acoustic and vibration engineering, user experience, and more. Some passenger experience highlights include: eView™ brings entertainment, information, and reassurance to our passengers. eCall™ leverages significant expertise in UX design while giving people the convenient ability to call an elevator from their smartphones. Vibrant actuators on panels create a 3-dimensional sound environment for a smoother ride. New award-winning Ambiance hall fixtures are designed for accessibility, user experience, and aesthetics.
5.
Designing the ultimate passenger experience
Our engineers have applied the same “drive by wire” technology used in the aerospace and automotive industries to elevators. In doing this, we created a digital safety software platform that:
6.
Shifting from mechanics to electronics
Enhances passenger safety through increased electronic controls Activates an immediate response in case of an emergency event Quickly identifies service or maintenance issues Enhances remote actions to resolve incidents quickly
From mechanical
To electrical
In case of an event, remote experts can often identify issue and resolve
MECHANICAL GOVERNOR Detects overspeed
TRAVELING CABLE Triggers safeties
TENSION PULLEY Rope tension
Absolute Positioning Reference System Constant monitoring of car positioning in the hoistway and speed during travel
Car Control Station Main elevator safety nodes. Analyze in real time all information from safety components
Electronic Safety Actuator Includes an accelerometer to redundantly monitor car speed and triggers the mechanical safety brake when needed
The electronic safety actuator (ESA) in an elevator is a key part of the “drive by wire” electronic safety system. The ESA is triggered electronically through electromagnetic components and is in constant communication with the safety controller. Additional key technology enablers include advanced materials and a deep understanding of system dynamics and tribology.
7.
Advanced technologies + electronics advancing elevator safety with a smaller footprint
Nearly 170 years ago, Otis helped make the modern vertical city possible and transformed the way people live and work. As we look to the future, we must ensure that our influence is also sustainable, inclusive, and ethical. Our engineers help us innovate new, sustainable solutions for to minimize the lifecycle impact of our elevators every day. For example, Gen360’s electrical system is designed to use the least amount of energy possible while an elevator is in standby, waiting for the next passengers. When combined with compact gearless permanent magnet machines, the ReGen™ drive, LED lighting, low voltage architecture, best-in-class semiconductor technologies and more, it gets the best possible energy rating for elevators! Taking it a step even further, our engineers designed the Switch option with energy storage, power conditioning, the ability to connect to renewable energy sources like solar!
